Amsterdam + Zaanstreek · self-guided cycling loop

Windmills, brickwork
and a good long ride.

A route from Museumplein to Zaanse Schans and back, threading together Dutch food and drink, queer history, extraordinary architecture, and two waterside crossings.

Before you go

This is a full-day ride, not a five-hour stroll.

≈54 kmrouting line; expect variation

3–3½ hmoving time at a relaxed pace

6–8 hwith windmills, food, views and ferries

The original five-hour idea works only as a brisk sampler: take the ferry north, ride straight to Zaanse Schans, choose one mill and one snack, then return by train from Zaandam with bikes only if the operator permits it. For the designed route below, allow a whole day and keep the GPX as a reference rather than treating it as a live navigation service.

The track

See the whole loop, then take it one stop at a time.

Blue is the importable planning track. Orange markers are stops; dotted crossings are ferries, where you roll the bicycle on and follow crew directions.

The itinerary

A sequence built around the things worth getting off the bike for.

  1. 01

    Museumplein → Homomonument

Start among the museum quarter, then ride the canal belt to the pink-granite memorial. It is a grounding beginning for the route’s queer-history thread.

  2. 02

    NEMO rooftop

Park at the base and walk up Renzo Piano’s sloping, ship-like roof for an IJ and old-harbor panorama. Check same-day rooftop access before committing time.

  3. 03

    F3 Buiksloterweg ferry

From behind Centraal, wheel your bike aboard the free IJ ferry to Noord. It is a short, frequent crossing — no ticket and no bike supplement — but do not plan a connection tighter than one missed boat.

  4. 04

    Inntel Zaandam → Zaanse Schans

Pause at the surreal stacked-house façade, then continue north on the cycling line to the Zaan. At Zaanse Schans, park and explore the river path on foot: the mills, warehouses, cheese tasting and bakery are much better at walking speed.

  5. 05

    F6 Distelweg → Pontsteiger

On the return, this cross-IJ ferry avoids a long detour. It is also free for bicycles. Check the live GVB planner on the day: service frequency and engineering diversions can change.

  6. 06

    Museum Het Schip

Detour through Spaarndammerbuurt for Amsterdam School social housing at its most expressive: sculptural brick, portals, towers and public-minded design.

  7. 07

    Café ’t Mandje

At Zeedijk 63, pause at a foundational queer landmark. Bet van Beeren opened it in 1927 as an unusually open refuge for gay men and women.

  8. 08

    Brouwerij ’t IJ → Moeders → Museumplein

Finish beneath De Gooyer windmill with a brewery stop, then make the sit-down meal at Moeders. The current dinner service begins at 17:00; it has vegetarian options, but reserve ahead and confirm the day’s menu.

Mode transitions

How the ferries fit into a bicycle day.

F3 · Centraal ↔ Buiksloterweg

Use it outbound. The GVB IJ ferries F1–F7 are free for pedestrians, (moped) cyclists and mobility vehicles. Walk the bicycle into the marked waiting lane, wait for passengers to disembark, then roll on when instructed. GVB describes F3 as day-and-night; use its planner for the live departure countdown.

F6 · Distelweg ↔ Pontsteiger

Use it inbound. This free cross-IJ transfer places you near the Western Docklands / Spaarndammerbuurt side of the return. Treat both crossings as a pause, not a timed appointment: arrivals, weather and operational changes happen.

Plan B · make it shorter

If the day, weather or legs turn, do not force the last third. Head for Zaandam Station and ask the rail operator about bicycle carriage for your exact train and time; rules, capacity and peak restrictions apply. This page deliberately does not promise a bike-on-train shortcut.

Usefully specific

Stops to pre-check before setting out.

Zaanse Schans

The open-air area is different from individual mills and museums. Check the current opening times and tickets for the exact mill(s) you want, especially outside the main season.

Eye Filmmuseum option

For a late museum alternative, Eye’s exhibition hours are listed as 10:00–19:00 daily, while its restaurant runs later. It fits best if you use the F3 crossing on the way back instead of the full western leg.

Vegetarian dinner

Moeders lists dinner from 17:00 and says it has vegetarian choices. Its small room books out, so choose a reservation first and let that time determine the final city leg.

Route concept based on the supplied Google Maps loop and Amsterdam bike-tour notes. Every original stop is preserved in order; F3 and F6 are explicit transfer additions. Cycling legs use BRouter’s trekking profile, with level cycle approaches at NEMO and De Kat (park before walking to each pin). If you stray more than 140 m, BRouter receives only your recovery start and rejoin endpoints to calculate the orange cycle route; otherwise GPS processing stays on this device. The direction-up map uses the open-source leaflet-rotate plugin. This remains a planning aid, not a guarantee of on-street conditions. Historical background: City of Amsterdam on Café ’t Mandje.
